Birth: Baylee Lyn Denton

January 8, 2011

Baylee Lyn Denton, a girl, was born Dec. 30, 2010, at Midland Memorial Hospital, weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces and was 19 inches long. She is the daughter of Justin and Kendra Denton of Midland.

Grandparents Lesa and Rick Gamble of Big Spring and Pam Rinehart and Dickie Denton of Midland.

She was welcomed home by older siblings Jake Denton and Paige Carille.

Griffith anniversary

January 8, 2011

Jay Maurice and Vivian Griffith celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, with a party hosted by friends.

Jay met Vivian Earwood in Sanderson and they were married Jan. 1, 1942, in San Antonio. They have spent most of their married lives in Big Spring.

Over the years, Jay worked for several railroads and retired in 1982. Vivian worked for the federal service and retired in 1976.

Archer-Bagwell engagement

Mandy and Tom Archer of Marion, Ark., are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Taylor Danielle Archer of Marion, Ark., to Jonathan Charles Bagwell of Little Rock, Ark., the son of Sue and Chuck Bagwell of Big Spring.

The bride-to-be is currently a fourth-year medical student at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and plans to enter a pediatrist practice.

Robertson-Villarreal engagement

Dinah and Larry Robertson of Trophy Club are proud to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Faith Robertson of Big Spring, to Dr. Marcus Villarreal of Big Spring, the son of Theresa Riggs and Andre Villarreal of Denton.

The bride-to-be is a 1995 graduate of Northwest High School and a graduate of Texas Tech University. She is currently employed by Dwain Fox P.C.

The prospective groom is a 1995 graduate of Denton High School and graduate of Texas Tech University and Parker Chiropractic College. He is currently employed by Back in Motion.

Bird Poop: Red-tailed hawk succumbs to its wounds

December 28, 2010

On call during the first weekend of December, the officer had gone to pick up a large hawk during the afternoon. After securing the raptor in his truck, he drove back to the shelter. The opportunity to handle such a bird reminded him of his days at the San Antonio zoo and other facilities.

After notifying the game warden, the officer was given our number to call. Since Odessa’s animal control was officially closed, we arranged to meet on Sunday morning.

Teeters-Matlock

The Rev. Dennis and Susie Teeters of Big Spring are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Summer Dawn Teeters, to Michael Dwayne Matlock of Andrews, the son of Sandra Matlock of Lubbock and the late Rev. Dwayne Matlock.

The bride to be is the granddaughter of the Rev. Monroe Teeters of Big Spring and Normand and Patsy Mayes of Snyder. She is a 2001 graduate of Lamesa High School.

The prospective groom is a 1989 graduate of Plainview High School and 1994 graduate of Nazarene University. He is director of the Andrews High School Choir.

Bird Poop: A loon regains its water wings

Lying on its side, the brownish gray bird struggled to pull itself toward the grassy median. Turbulence created by passing motorists sprayed fine bits of gravel and dust over its feathers and into its eyes. After reaching the edge of the asphalt, it could go no further. 
Resting after such an effort, it did not hear the vehicle stop some distance behind it.

Surprised by the hands that suddenly pressed against its wings and heavy body, the bird used its large webbed feet to push against the man’s waist. With its long, sharp bill it nipped at his arms.

The library closed at 3 p.m. today for the Thanksgiving holidays. We will re-open Monday at 10 a.m. Remember that you can drop off DVDs and CD (books, too) at the book drop located at the entrance.
