Sands, Grady head to tourney

The Sands High School Mustangs and Grady High School Wildcats kept their state title hopes alive on Tuesday. Both teams hammered out wins in their regional quarterfinal playoff games at Wolfforth Frenship High School.

Some of West Texas’ top high school softball programs will converge on Big Spring beginning tomorrow to compete in the 2014 Tournament at the Crossroads event. The tournament is slated to get under way Thursday and run through Saturday at the Roy Anderson Sports Complex.

The New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds held off a late rally by the Hawks to claim a crucial 63-62 win in front of a large crowd in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum on Monday. In so doing, the Thunderbirds clarified Howard College’s postseason hopes ... win on Thursday in Snyder or watch from the bleachers.

The New Mexico Junior College Lady Thunderbirds moved a step closer to claiming the Western Junior College Athletic Conference women’s basketball championship on Monday night in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
And they Howard College Lady Hawks weren’t too thrilled about it.

The Big Spring High School Lady Steers’ softball team’s trip to Stephenville this past weekend went anything but the way they had hoped. Big Spring went 2-2 in the annual Honeybee Invitational, which was held Thursday through Saturday in the Stephenville City Park.

The Howard College Hawks’ head coach went into their weekend series with El Paso Community College looking for his team to improve its production at the plate. Quality at-bats mean more offensive production head coach Britt Smith had preached to his team.
The Tejanos probably wish they hadn’t listened as well.

GC girls fall to Hornets in finals

The Garden City Lady Bearkats saw their 2013-14 season come to an end with a loss to the No. 2-ranked Highland Lady Hornets in the Region II-A, Division 2 championship game. Highland’s 51-37 win sends the Lady Hornets to the state tournament, which begins on Feb. 27 in Austin.

Steers expect ‘tough’ game against Mustangs

Big Spring High School head boys’ basketball coach Ian Ritchey isn’t one to sugar coat issues for his players. He doesn’t mind telling them they “coasted” into the playoffs, or that tonight’s area playoff matchup with the Shallowater Mustangs isn’t going to be easy. In fact, Ritchey doesn’t mind telling his team they will be going up against a tough Shallowater team when they hit the floor at 6 p.m. in the Andrews High School gymnasium.

Howard College men’s basketball coach Scott Raines didn’t expect his team to turn in a Picasso performance against the New Mexico Military Institute on Monday evening. The sheer emotion involved in claiming a win over Odessa College on Thursday along with a 4-hour bus ride to Roswell, N.M. was a recipe for a slow start.
