Coahoma High School head coach Trey Gardner and Forsan head coach Jason Phillips had a lot in common on Friday night as they watched their two teams square off in season-opening “Howard Bowl.” Both were less than pleased with the way their team’s played. Mistakes. Turnovers. Penalties. Missed opportunities. In the end, however, Gardner had a little less to be unhappy about.

MONAHANS – The Big Spring High School defense had every chance in the world to fold up like a cheap suit on Friday night in front of a large crowd at Estes Memorial Stadium. Sure. At times, they were pushed around more than a lawnmower in Florida as they gave up 364 yards. Sure. They got a little help from the officiating crew that overturned a fourth-quarter touchdown that would have given the Loboes a lead with just ovet 2 minutes to play.
Kyler Franks and Joseph Melendez both rushed for a pair of touchdowns and helped the Bulldogs reel off a convincing 38-7 rout of the McCamey Badgers on Friday in front of a large crowd at Bulldog Stadium.
Jesse Cervantes rushed for three touchdowns on Friday night and helped the Forsan Buffaloes scratch their way into the win column with a dominating 57-0 rout of the Plains Cowboys.

Odessa outlasts Lady Hawks

The Odessa College Lady Wranglers came into Monday’s showdown with the Howard College Hawks figuring they should have an easy win. They were, after all, playing at home and facing a Howard College team that was ranked in the lower half of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference standings.

Lady Hawks end slump in OT

Sarah Stinnett has rebounded plenty of basketballs during the season for the Howard College Lady Hawks. None, however, were quite as important as the one she grabbed with 1:19 left in overtime on Thursday night in front of a large crowd in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
With the game tied at 54-54 in overtime, Stinnett pulled are bound out of the air and raced to the other end of the floor before dishing the ball to freshman Bailey Wipff, who was immediately fouled.

The Big Spring High School Steers placed four players on the 63rd Annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A All-State Football Team, which was released this morning. Among the players named to the squad were Shaiem Menefield, Devin Roberson, Tate Kennedy and Tobyn Tannehill.

The Ira High School Lady Bulldogs added some precious metal to their trophy case on Wednesday night by grabbing a thrilling 40-48 win over the Sterling City Lady Eagles in a Class A bi-district playoff game played in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

After that, head coach Gary Huckabee said his team isn’t really sure about much else. The who, what and when of their bi-district round matchup will all be decided Friday when Morton and Springlake-Earth meet in a district playoff to determine the No. 3 seed in the District 5-A standings.
