Coahoma High School head coach Trey Gardner and Forsan head coach Jason Phillips had a lot in common on Friday night as they watched their two teams square off in season-opening “Howard Bowl.” Both were less than pleased with the way their team’s played. Mistakes. Turnovers. Penalties. Missed opportunities. In the end, however, Gardner had a little less to be unhappy about.

MONAHANS – The Big Spring High School defense had every chance in the world to fold up like a cheap suit on Friday night in front of a large crowd at Estes Memorial Stadium. Sure. At times, they were pushed around more than a lawnmower in Florida as they gave up 364 yards. Sure. They got a little help from the officiating crew that overturned a fourth-quarter touchdown that would have given the Loboes a lead with just ovet 2 minutes to play.
Kyler Franks and Joseph Melendez both rushed for a pair of touchdowns and helped the Bulldogs reel off a convincing 38-7 rout of the McCamey Badgers on Friday in front of a large crowd at Bulldog Stadium.
Jesse Cervantes rushed for three touchdowns on Friday night and helped the Forsan Buffaloes scratch their way into the win column with a dominating 57-0 rout of the Plains Cowboys.

The Big Spring High School Lady Steers capped their 2013-14 high school basketball season recently by having three members of their playoff qualifying squad named to the District 4-3A all-district team. Garnering honors from the district’s coaches were Julianna Rodriguez, Dyrshae Vanderbilt and Diamonique Mayes.

The Big Spring High School boys’ golf team turned in a stellar outing on Saturday at the San Angelo Boys’ Golf Classic on Saturday at the Quicksand Golf Course. The Steers finished seventh in the final team standings in the Blue Division with a team total of 694.

Big Spring High School Lady Steers’ head track coach Nick Roberson was realistic going into Friday’s 2014 Big Spring Invitational Track and Field meet at Blankenship Field. He knew the Frenship Lady Tigers had the sheer numbers to dominate the meet, so he took a different approach, looking for quality over quantity.
He found plenty to be happy with.

NMJC ends HC’s bid for national tourney

New Mexico Junior College posted a 6-3 run in the final 1:18 off regulation on Friday afternoon in the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock and claimed a tough 64-60 victory in the semifinal round of the Region V Basketball Tournament. With the loss, the Haws’ season ended one game shy of a berth in the national tournament.

Howard shocks No. 7 McLennan in Region V tournament

LUBBOCK - Howard College men’s basketball coach Scott Raines offered his team an easy way out prior to the start of the Region V Basketball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock. He told them they could get on the bus and return to Big Spring and not worry about a possible rematch with New Mexico Junior College.
Fortunately for Raines, the Hawks wanted no part of the “easy” road.

Coahoma puts 4 on 4-2A roster

The Coahoma High School Bulldogettes may not have posted as many wins on the basketball court this season, but that didn’t stop them garnering plenty of notice from the District 4-2A coaches when it came time to pass out postseason honors.
Coahoma had four players named to the District 4-2A all-district squad, including Newcomer of the Year Lauren Simer and first-teamers Savannah Neff and Kaeli Yeager.
