Big Spring
SNYDER — Big Spring Head Baseball Coach Bert Otto’s team is off to another good start.
Using a little small ball, patience and luck, the Steers won their district opener on the road against Snyder by a score of 2-0.
Both teams’ bats were quiet to start off, when in the top of the fourth inning, Haegan Rodriguez led off with a stand-up triple.
Gunnar Kennedy then hit a ball hard to the Tigers’ short stop who committed a throwing error, allowing Rodriguez to cross home plate and Kennedy to advance to second base.
Big Spring
SNYDER — District play has been full of ups and downs for Big Spring — and it’s only the first week.
After a 12-2 run-rule victory over Wylie to kick off 4-3A action, the Lady Steers lost by the same score to Snyder on Tuesday, also in run-rule fashion.
“They did to us exactly what we did to Wylie,” BSHS Head Coach John Sparks said.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A dominant first half and another strong performance from the Howard College starting five propelled No. 13 seed Howard College to a 63-54 victory over Eastern Mississippi (20th seed) Monday to open National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament play at the Sports Arena.
Of Cameron Forte's 18 points, 16 came in the first stanza. The Hawks (29-5) opened the game with a 12-0 run, putting the Lions (20-8) in the hole early.
LUBBOCK — Howard College's whole season came down to a free throw. With the game tied at 59 with 4.32 seconds left on the clock, if New Mexico Junior College's Desmond Lee missed his second shot from the line, the NJCAA Region V championship game at the Rip Griffin Center would have likely gone into overtime. But he made it, putting the Thunderbirds up 60-59.
LUBBOCK — Two down, one to go. The Hawks started off strong in the semifinal round of the NJCAA Region V tournament Friday at the Rip Griffin Center against conference foe Odessa College — who Howard dispatched twice already this season — but the Wranglers battled back to give the Hawks a scare before a strong second half showing by the seven-foot Goran Huskic, who keyed the Hawks' 71-56 win.
COAHOMA — It was a tough season for the young Bulldogette hoops squad (4-11, 1-4), but like many other Crossroads area sports teams, they are young and full of promise.
And that's not just coachspeak either. Three CHS basketball players were selected to represent the school and they are all underclassmen — a good sign of things to come, according to Head Girls Basketball Coach Paul Hartman.
WOMEN
The Hawks have been eliminated from postseason play, but went out with their heads held high after a 55-38 victory over Frank Phillips College on Thursday at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
Tori Tucker scored a game-high 21 points, while Destinee Thrash added eight and Teiona Tarrant chipped in seven for the Hawks.
It was a bittersweet end to a year full of obstacles for Head Coach Earl Diddle — who dealt with the loss of multiple starters throughout the season.
SEMINOLE — And then there was one. No. 8 Grady rolled past Ropes in a Class A, Division II regional quarterfinal playoff round Tuesday, routing the Eagles 72-38 using a balanced offensive attack and aggressive defense.
With the win, the Wildcats (25-6) advanced to the regional semifinal, where they will meet the winner of the Whitharral-Nazareth game which is being held today due to a weather postponement.
It's been another successful season for Howard College Men's Basketball. After opening Western Junior College Athletic Conference play with a 2-2 record, the Hawks have reached the apex.
With Monday's 87-69 win over New Mexico Military Institute, HC — despite dropping two games to rival Midland College — sits atop the conference with a 12-3 record. The Hawks have won six straight and 10 of their last 11.
Three Lady Steers — senior Logan Yarbar (First Team), junior Dyrshae Vanderbilt and sophomore Julianna Rodriguez (Second Team) — were selected to represent Big Spring by being named to the All-District squad for their work on the basketball court this season.
The Lady Steers had an overall record of 16-16 and finished at .500 in a competitive division, but fell just short of a postseason appearance after losing to Sweetwater in a game to determine the third and final playoff seed.
