Roughnecks rough up Buffs 43-0

October 6, 2012

FORSAN — After winning their first four games of the season, the injury-plagued Forsan Buffaloes have now dropped two straight after a 43-0 rout by the Sundown Roughnecks on Friday at Buffalo Stadium.

Forsan — despite missing five offensive starters — the Buffs looked strong early in the matchup as Forsan kept the chains moving, but were ultimately stopped by an aggresssive Roughneck defense — who clearly used its size advantage over the Buffaloes.

COAHOMA
FORSAN — Coahoma's homecoming was thwarted by the rain and its game moved to Forsan's more accomodating artificial turf as the endless rain Friday made a mess of Bulldog Stadium. Homecoming activities were postponed until the Stanton game, which is slated for Oct. 12.

Last night, The Bulldogs hosted undefeated Ballinger and the Bearcats mauled Coahoma 21-0.

The loss was Coahoma's third straight as Head Coach Trey Gardner's team has been battling a host of injuries to key players on offense and defense.

Steers top Indians 29-19

Memorial Stadium was awash in sheets of rain Friday as Big Spring hosted Seminole for its last predistrict bout.

The Steers allowed two late scores, but the Indians' rally wasn't enough as Big Spring — who recorded an 0-10 record last season — improved to 5-0 after a sloppy 29-19 victory.

The rain — which didn't let up throughout the entire evening — made the game a bit more interesting than BSHS Head Coach Phillip Ritchey may have wanted at times.

The Steers kept the win streak alive for an enthusiastic homecoming crowd as Big Spring — led by sophomore quarterback Tobyn Tannehill — walked all over rival Andrews, defeating the Mustangs 51-14 andimproving to 4-0 on the season.

For the second straight week, the Steers' opponents drew first blood. Andrews quarterback Shane Dolgener threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead on the first possession of the game when the point after was missed.

TUSCOLA — This time, the Buffaloes hunted the Indians.

The undefeated Forsan Buffaloes traveled to meet the winless Jim Ned High School on Friday, but barely scraped by with a victory as the Buffs were forced to mount a 25-point comeback to defeat the Indians, who had jumped out to 21-0 lead by the end of the first half of play.

Forsan's Brendan Roman scored two running touchdowns and rushed for 117 yards and Trevor Burchett had a 37-yard scoring reception. Burchett also shared quarterbacking duties with Marcus Cervantes. Both passed for one touchdown apiece.

Big Spring —

The Steers’ redemption of last year’s 0-10 record is well underway.

Big Spring is now 3-0 as they head into Friday’s homecoming game against Andrews and senior linebacker Max Pappajohn has played a big part of the program’s success.

“He had the big hit of the game (against Lake View) defensively,” BSHS Head Coach Phillip Ritchey said. “He is all over the field making plays and being a leader.”

Pappajohn also plays tight end on the offensive side of the ball.

Coahoma —

COAHOMA — In what shaped up to be a battle resulting in numerous injuries sustained by both sides, the Bulldogs fell to the Colorado City Wolves 20-6 in a gritty duel Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

“It was a very physical affair,” said Coahoma Head Coach Trey Gardner of the loss.

The Bulldogs' only score came in the second quarter on a T.J. White run to give Coahoma six points. The kick after was no good and the Bulldogs couldn't put together another scoring drive for the remainder of the game.

Forsan wins battle of Buffaloes at homecoming

FORSAN — In the battle of the Crossroads Buffaloes, Forsan reigned supreme. The win also marks the first 3-0 start by the Forsan Buffs since 1998.

Keying Forsan's 28-7 victory was a staunch defense and a running game which improved since last week's flat, 14-0 victory over Coleman.

“We ran the ball a lot more consistently this week,” Forsan Head Coach Jason Phillips said. “We started finding the holes and the offensive line was locking up well.”

SAN ANGELO — It wasn't pretty, but the Steers are now 3-0.

San Angelo Lake View gave Big Spring all it could handle and the Steers shot themselves in the foot several times during their 22-14 win over the Chiefs at San Angelo Stadium on Friday.

Two down, eight to go — that is the official count after Big Spring Head Football Coach Phillip Ritchey's bold, preseason prediction of taking the Steers from an 0-10 team to a 10-0 team in just one season.

Last week, Big Spring throttled Fort Stockton 49-0 in the season opener. The comeback continued on the new turf recently laid at Memorial Stadium on Friday as Big Spring upset Midland Christian — reigning TAPPS 4A state champions — 17-12.

Again, Ritchey was surprised at the fortitude displayed by his team.
