Tannehill goes to Dolphins

April 27, 2012

NEW YORK — Former Big Spring High School athlete Ryan Tannehill was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the NFL draft Thursday.

Tannehill was the eighth pick overall and the third quarterback chosen behind Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

The Dolphins must think highly of Tannehill. He is the first quarterback the organization has used a first round pick on since the legendary gunslinger Dan Marino.

That doesn't seem to be bothering the young superstar, as he told the Miami Herald, “I don't think there is any pressure or anything like that from that connection.”

Forsan takes opening playoff game from Crane

April 27, 2012

MIDLAND — Forsan Head Softball Coach Shanna Taylor was happy to get away with an 11-3 win last night against the Crane Ladybirds in the opening round of District 3-2A play.

Despite the lopsided score, Forsan gave Crane several opportunities to snatch the victory from their hands, but when the situation appeared to be turning dire, the Lady Buffs' offense came alive and timely hitting saved the season.

Forsan tennis stars prepare for trip to state

April 26, 2012

Forsan seniors Sydney Holdampf and Kyle Stevenson have both been to the state tennis tournament in Austin before.

Although both of them were eliminated from play in the first round, they believe the experience will help them deal with the mental challenge of competing at such a level when they return to the University of Texas campus to take the courts once again April 30-May 1.

Holdampf and Stevenson played well throughout the year, leading Forsan to a first place finish in district and a second place showing at the regional meet where they each won in straight sets.

Big Spring golfers to tee off at state tourney in Austin

April 26, 2012

Big Spring High School's 21-year drought is over. That's how long it has been since a BSHS golf squad has made an appearance at the state golf tournament.

The Jimmy Clay Golf Course — one of the toughest in the state — in Austin awaits the team. As well as the top high school golfers in the state.

But if you ask Coach Chris Joslin, he would tell you that this is a special year on the links for the Steers golfers.

“All of the kids played really well all year,” Joslin said. It's an exciting time for Big Spring. We feel like all five guys are going to compete.”

Each of the student-athletes received full scholarships, and are ready to take their educations — as well as their game — to the next level.

Jerrell, who signed with Stephen F. Austin University, said she has enjoyed the change Big Spring offered her.

Howard Hawk Noatala leads nation in JUCO homers

April 19, 2012

What wears red and black, leads the nation in home runs and can strike out three opposing batters in a row? If you are a fan of Howard College softball, you would know the answer is Olive Noatala.

Noatala, a sophomore at Howard College is leading the nation (yes, the nation), in National Junior College Athletic Association play with 26 dingers.

Three of them were hit Wednesday during a doubleheader at Foundation Field against Frank Phillips College. Noatala also produced nine RBIs on the day bringing her total for the season to 74 — also on the nation’s leaderboard.

Hawks soar past Plainsmen, Noatala hits walk-off grand slam

April 19, 2012

Spectators at Foundation Field not only saw a doubleheader Wednesday at which the Howard College Hawk softball squad trounced Frank Phillips College 11-3 the first game and 12-0 the second, but were also treated to a homerun display — eight to be exact — by Hawk batters including a walk-off grand slam by the NJCAA home run leader, Olive Noatala, which ended the first game in dramatic fashion.

After falling behind 2-0 to the Plainsmen early in Game One, the HC hitting engine apparently just needed to warm up a little before cranking out the runs.

April 18, 2012

COLORADO CITY — The Coahoma Bulldogettes had one thing on their minds Tuesday — avenge their only District 3-2A loss to the Colorado City Lady Wolves and take sole possession of first place in the highly competitive region.

Unfortunately, that plan was dashed with a 7-3 loss which forced a three-way tie between Coahoma, Colorado City and Forsan.

Seaton signs letter of intent

April 18, 2012

Taylor Seaton is passionate about volleyball. This coming fall, she will get a chance to take that passion to the next level.

Seaton, a senior at Big Spring High School, signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at McMurry University in Abilene on Tuesday at the BSHS Athletic Training Center.

Heavily recruited by the institution, Seaton believes McMurry will be a good fit for many reasons.

“I really wanted to go to a school that has Christian values,” Seaton said. “I know that is where I am supposed to be.”
