Coahoma High School head coach Trey Gardner and Forsan head coach Jason Phillips had a lot in common on Friday night as they watched their two teams square off in season-opening “Howard Bowl.” Both were less than pleased with the way their team’s played. Mistakes. Turnovers. Penalties. Missed opportunities. In the end, however, Gardner had a little less to be unhappy about.
Steers win season opener in dramatic fashion with a 41-yard "Hail Mary" pass in the end zone as time expires.
MONAHANS – The Big Spring High School defense had every chance in the world to fold up like a cheap suit on Friday night in front of a large crowd at Estes Memorial Stadium. Sure. At times, they were pushed around more than a lawnmower in Florida as they gave up 364 yards. Sure. They got a little help from the officiating crew that overturned a fourth-quarter touchdown that would have given the Loboes a lead with just ovet 2 minutes to play.
Kyler Franks and Joseph Melendez both rushed for a pair of touchdowns and helped the Bulldogs reel off a convincing 38-7 rout of the McCamey Badgers on Friday in front of a large crowd at Bulldog Stadium.
Jesse Cervantes rushed for three touchdowns on Friday night and helped the Forsan Buffaloes scratch their way into the win column with a dominating 57-0 rout of the Plains Cowboys.

Late shot lifts Hawks to win

February 14, 2012

ROSWELL, N.M. — Remember that old sports cliché about “throwing the records out the window when these two teams meet?” Apply it to just about any Howard College-New Mexico Military Institute basketball game.

The Hawks and NMMI entered Monday night's Western Junior College Athletic Conference matchup at opposite ends of the conference spectrum — Howard was firmly in second place, while the Broncos were ensconced in the WJCAC cellar.

So, of course, the game wasn't decided until the final moments.

Steers, Lady Steers stop Snyder

February 8, 2012

The Big Spring Steers had a drama-free solution to a suspenseful situation.

The Steers left little doubt as to their qualifications for the state basketball playoffs Tuesday by taking a 61-44 win over Snyder that clinched a postseason berth for Big Spring.

Also Tuesday, the Big Spring Lady Steers closed out the regular season with 55-42 win over Snyder.

Boy's game

Heading into Tuesday's game, the Steers knew that if they won, they would clinch the last playoff spot from District 5-3A. Lose, however, and they could have missed the postseason altogether.

Howard women halt losing streak

February 7, 2012

BORGER — The Howard College women's basketball team apparently decided that enough was enough.

After having lost four Western Junior College Athletic Conference games in a row, then finding themselves in a close battle with Frank Phillips College Monday, the Hawks suddenly found a winning combination, riding the hot hands of Zeslie Johnson and Kali Jerrell to a 65-46 victory over the Lady Plainsmen.

In the nightcap, Shavon Coleman scored 26 points to lead the Howard men to a 68-55 victory over Frank Phillips.

Hawks open baseball season with doubleheader sweep

February 3, 2012

Heading into Thursday's season opener, Britt Smith was counting on pitching to be a strength for the Howard College baseball team.

So far, so good.

Five Howard pitchers combined to surrender only one earned run as the Hawks opened their season with a 7-4, 10-0 doubleheader sweep of Frank Phillips College at Jack Barber Field Thursday afternoon.

Howard has split decision vs. NMJC

February 3, 2012

Mark Adams has long been an advocate of defense first in basketball, but even he approved of the offensive fireworks the Howard College Hawks set off inside Garrett Coliseum Thursday night.

A scorching first half paved the way for Howard to take a 71-54 win over New Mexico Junior College in Western Junior College Athletic Conference men's basketball action Thursday night.

The win improved the Hawks to 15-5 overall and 4-2 in WJCAC play, while NMJC dropped to 15-6, 3-3.
