Coahoma High School head coach Trey Gardner and Forsan head coach Jason Phillips had a lot in common on Friday night as they watched their two teams square off in season-opening “Howard Bowl.” Both were less than pleased with the way their team’s played. Mistakes. Turnovers. Penalties. Missed opportunities. In the end, however, Gardner had a little less to be unhappy about.
Steers win season opener in dramatic fashion with a 41-yard "Hail Mary" pass in the end zone as time expires.
MONAHANS – The Big Spring High School defense had every chance in the world to fold up like a cheap suit on Friday night in front of a large crowd at Estes Memorial Stadium. Sure. At times, they were pushed around more than a lawnmower in Florida as they gave up 364 yards. Sure. They got a little help from the officiating crew that overturned a fourth-quarter touchdown that would have given the Loboes a lead with just ovet 2 minutes to play.
Kyler Franks and Joseph Melendez both rushed for a pair of touchdowns and helped the Bulldogs reel off a convincing 38-7 rout of the McCamey Badgers on Friday in front of a large crowd at Bulldog Stadium.
Jesse Cervantes rushed for three touchdowns on Friday night and helped the Forsan Buffaloes scratch their way into the win column with a dominating 57-0 rout of the Plains Cowboys.

Howard has split decision vs. NMJC

February 3, 2012

Mark Adams has long been an advocate of defense first in basketball, but even he approved of the offensive fireworks the Howard College Hawks set off inside Garrett Coliseum Thursday night.

A scorching first half paved the way for Howard to take a 71-54 win over New Mexico Junior College in Western Junior College Athletic Conference men's basketball action Thursday night.

The win improved the Hawks to 15-5 overall and 4-2 in WJCAC play, while NMJC dropped to 15-6, 3-3.

UIL announces realignment

February 2, 2012

Forsan's moving down, Coahoma's moving west and Big Spring is pretty much staying put.

The University Interscholastic League's biennial realignment of Texas high schools didn't produce many changes in classifications, but likely added plenty of expenses to school's travel budgets.

This latest realignment takes effect with the 2012-2013 school year.
The school affected the least by realignment is Big Spring High School, which will remain in Class 3A for the next two years.

BSHS sweeps Sweetwater

February 1, 2012

The Big Spring Steers and Lady Steers followed similar scripts to victory against Sweetwater Tuesday – struggle early, use defense and three-point shooting to take the lead, then blow matters wide open in the second half.

The results were anything but boring for BSHS fans – the Lady Steers claimed a 53-31 win, while the Steers raced to a 48-37 victory in District 5-3A action for both teams.

The Lady Steers improved to 20-8 overall, 3-3 in district play, while the Steers are now 13-16, 3-3.

Howard hoops squads fall at South Plains

January 31, 2012

LEVELLAND — Howard College Men's Basketball Coach Mark Adams isn't much one for moral victories, but even he saw a little bit of a silver lining in the Hawks' nail-bitingly close loss to top-ranked South Plains Monday night.

The Hawks pushed South Plains down to the wire — almost to the last second, actually — before finally dropping a 65-62 decision in Western Junior College Athletic Conference action.

Last-minute magic: Hawks down Odessa in OT thriller

January 27, 2012

Coaches and players like to talk about intensity as if it's something that can be bottled and stored away for use at appropriate times, but in truth it's an intangible thing that you either have or you don't.

Thursday night against Odessa College, the Howard College Hawks lacked intensity in the first half. The second half, however, was a far different story.

The Hawks rebounded from a double-digit deficit in the first half to earn a 91-88 overtime win over OC in a Western Junior College Athletic Conference thriller at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum Thursday night.

Howard-Odessa women's game postponed

January 27, 2012

A glitch in referee assignments resulted in the postponement of Thursday's Western Junior College Athletic Conference women's basketball game between Howard College and Odessa College.

The game is now set for a 6 p.m. tip-off tonight at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

HC officials said that the WJCAC administrator responsible for assigning officials to particular games failed to have referees available for Thursday's game in Big Spring. After failing to find alternate referees, officials from both schools decided upon the postponement.
