Forsan set to take on Bushland

May 11, 2011

Forsan High School, fresh off a bi-district title, will take on a tough Bushland squad at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lubbock Cooper.

The best-of-three area playoff will continue with a second game at noon Friday at the same location, followed by a third game — if necessary — 30 minutes after Game 2.

“They went to the state tournament last year, so they are a solid team all-around,” Forsan Coach Jason Phillips said this morning. “They hit the ball really well. We are going to have to play one of our best games and I think if we do that, we have a good chance to win.”

Hawks fight back in tourney with extra-innings wins

May 11, 2011

LUBBOCK — A day after suffering their first loss in the Region V Baseball Tournament, Howard College's Hawks clawed their way back into contention.

In a day- and night-long affair at Dan Law Field here Tuesday, the Hawks first defeated Midland College 14-13 in 13 innings, then rallied in a late evening game to upend Weatherford College 6-1 in 15 innings.
With those victories, Howard has the opportunity at some revenge. At 1 p.m. today the Hawks were to take on New Mexico Junior College — the team that beat them 5-1 on Monday.

Pressure no problem for Stanton's Montez

May 6, 2011

STANTON — The Texas High School Track and Field Meet is one high-stakes event, but Adam Montez just may be pressure-proof.

After all, the Stanton High School senior has already thrived under one of the most pressure-packed situations a track and field runner can find himself in.

At last week's Region I-2A track meet in Odessa, a false start disqualified Montez from the 400-meter run final, meaning he went into the 800-meter run facing his last chance to qualify for the state meet.

No pressure, right?

Gem show: Pitchers shine as Hawks win 2 at regional tourney

May 6, 2011

LUBBOCK — The Howard College Hawks have made their name with hitting this softball season, but it was pitching and defense that saved the day Thursday.

The Hawks escaped a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the first inning, then turned things over to the pitching combo of Sandra Serna and Selina Mitchell en route to a 4-3 victory over Midland College in a second-round Region V West tournament game at Lubbock Christian University.

Offense key to Hawks' chances at Region V tournament

May 5, 2011

Anyone who has watched the Howard College softball team knows that, to a large degree, the Hawks will go as far as their bats will take them this postseason.

Fueled by one of the most potent offensive attacks in team history, the Hawks finished third in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference with a 19-6 mark, and they hope their bats remain hot as they prepare to open play at the Region V Softball Tournament, which begins Thursday at Lubbock Christian University.

FHS state track contingent's been there, done that

May 5, 2011

FORSAN — As Yogi Berra might say, it's like deja vu all over again.

When the Forsan High School boys' track contingent competes in the upcoming Class 2A state track and field meet in Austin, first-time jitters will not be in abundance.

That's because, for the most part, the same athletes will be competing in the same events on the same stage as they did at this time last year.

Menefield qualifies for state meet in two events

May 4, 2011

LUBBOCK — Just as he did in 2010, Big Spring High School’s Mike Menefield will compete in two events at the upcoming state track and field meet in Austin.

Menefield qualified for the state meet by placing first in the triple jump and second in the long jump at the Region I-3A meet, which concluded Tuesday in Lubbock.

After winning the triple jump during the first day of the regional meet Monday, Menefield recorded a distance of 22 feet, 1.25 inches to place second in the long jump Tuesday.

May 4, 2011

LUBBOCK — All track season, Brigette Tuitt and Desiree Anderson have been counted on to provide leadership to the Big Spring High School girls’ track team.

Tuesday, the duo led BSHS to the team title at the Region I-3A track meet in Lubbock.

BSHS trio state-meet bound

May 3, 2011

LUBBOCK — It doesn’t pay to doubt Mike Menefield.

The Big Spring High School track star earned a return trip to the Texas high school track meet in dramatic and convincing fashion, setting the triple jump record at the Region I-3A Track Meet in Lubbock Monday.

Menefield scratched on his first two attempts Monday, but on his third and final try, he uncorked a leap of 49 feet, 6.5 inches to both win the event and set the meet record at the same time.

His winning jump was more than three feet better than that posted by runner-up Dillon Wilkins of Mineral Wells.
