Adams named MVP of District 5-3A

March 2, 2011

Big Spring standout guard Luke Adams has been named District 5-3A's Most Valuable Player.

Adams' honor is the biggest for Big Spring as 5-3A's all-district boys' basketball selections were announced today.

Including Adams, the Steers had six players receive honors. Sophomore big man Chazzell Robinson was named Newcomer of the Year. Senior guard Tristian Clay made first team all-district, Mike Menefield and Marc Segundo made the second team and Devante Lloyd earned an honorable mention selection.

Area softball: BSHS wins, Coahoma, Forsan fall

March 2, 2011

Big Spring softball head coach John Sparks believes Jillian Valle is his go-to hitter right now.

She proved why that may be the case Tuesday afternoon.

Valle’s game-winning home run in the seventh inning pushed the Lady Steers past Greenwood, 6-5 at home Tuesday.

It was her second home run of the game. She finished the day going 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Sparks said Valle was as clutch as she could be. The Lady Steers were on their last out when Valle hit the bomb.

Garden City beat Hermleigh 72-36 in the bi-district round and Dell City 72-42 in the area round. Ira had a bye in the bi-district round, but beat Valentine 70-35 in the area round. Hawk women win play-in game for postseason berth

March 1, 2011

ODESSA — The Howard College women’s basketball team thought it was in the Region V Tournament after beating Frank Phillips to end the regular season.

They had to play one more game, however.

The Hawks beat New Mexico Junior College 66-61 Monday in Odessa in a game that determined which team will go to the Region V Tournament, which begins Thursday.

Kennedale ends Steers’ playoff run

February 26, 2011

BRECKENRIDGE — The Big Spring Steers were hanging on by a thread for most of Friday’s Class 3A area championship game against No. 4 Kennedale.

The Wildcats couldn’t exactly put the Steers away early and the Steers couldn’t seriously make a game out of it.

But like elite teams do, Kennedale wore down Big Spring on the way to a 74-43 win, ending the Steers’ season.

Steers face No. 4 Kennedale in area championship game

February 25, 2011

The Big Spring Steers are trying not to put too much pressure on themselves as today’s area championship matchup against No. 4 Kenndale at 8 p.m. in Breckenridge approaches.

After the Steers won Tuesday’s bi-district playoff game against Bowie, head coach Cliff Thompson mentioned if Big Spring beats Kennedale, there won’t be any movies made labeling it as the greatest upset of all time.
The message has been simple: Don’t be nervous, just believe.

Both Howard men, women headed to postseason

February 25, 2011

Howard College women’s basketball head coach Earl Diddle clearly was in a better mood by the end of Thursday night than he was before the regular season finale against Frank Phillips College started.

At one point, all he knew was New Mexico Junior College and Odessa College needed to lose and his team had to win if the Hawks wanted to return to the Region V Tournament. They could only control the latter.

However, with all the odds in the world against them, the Hawks took care of business and so did New Mexico and Odessa’s opponents. By the end of the night, Diddle was a happy man.

Howard women need win, help for postseason berth

February 24, 2011

The Howard College women’s basketball team needs a lot of help as far as making the Region V Tournament is concerned. Head coach Earl Diddle knows that much.

In order to clinch a berth, the Hawks not only have to take care of Frank Phillips at 5:45 p.m. today in Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, South Plains has to beat New Mexico Junior College and Midland College has to beat Odessa.

“We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do and then we’re at the hands of these other people, which is not a real good feeling,” Diddle said. “But that’s the position we’re in.”

Steers take bi-district playoff game against Bowie

February 23, 2011

CISCO — Riding the wave of momentum that got them in the postseason — and guard Kevin Dunn — the Bowie Jackrabbits tested the Big Spring
Steers early in Monday’s bi-district playoff game.

To combat that, the Steers didn’t just rely on Luke Adams. There was Marc Segundo and Tristian Clay hitting big jumpers and Mike Menefield and Devante Lloyd dominating in the post.

Everything fell into place for the Steers on the way to a 77-47 win to start the boys’ Class 3A playoffs.
