December 6, 2012

Big Spring

For the second time in four days, the Steers found themselves mired in an overtime battle with San Angelo Lake View on Tuesday, and for the second time, Big Spring came away the victors after nipping the Chiefs 65-63.

The first meeting between the Chiefs and the Steers was Saturday at the Doug McCutchen Memorial Basketball Tournament in San Angelo. BSHS ended the weekend with bang when Tyler Graves sunk a three-point shot as time expired to put the Steers up 57-56.

Last night's affair at Steer Gym was just as dramatic.

Steers recognized by District 4-3A

December 4, 2012

The only thing better than heading a team full of All-District athletes is knowing most of them will be back next season

Several Big Spring football players who received District 4-3A honors are underclassmen expected to return to action. That is a good sign for Steer football, according to Head Coach Phillip Ritchey.

“We have quite a few juniors recognized by the district coaches,” Ritchey said. “More so than any other class. That's certainly a good thing for next year.”

SEMINOLE — The Lady Steers (3-3) fell short on the road Tuesday against the Seminole Lady Indians, losing 30-24 despite a strong defensive showing.

BSHS Head Coach Mike Warren is focused on executing offensively before district play begins.

“We played really well on defense,” Warren said. “We could not get going offensively. (Seinole) ran zone on us and we couldn't hit our outside shots.”

Much of the reason for the Lady Steers' opponents using a zone defense attack is due to the scoring threat of Yaneira Tuitt.

Both Big Spring varsity basketball squads won last night at home.

The Lady Steers defeated Andrews 49-31 to improve to 3-2.

Yaneira Tuitt led BSHS with 18 points and five rebounds. Dyrshae Vanderbilt and sophomore Julianna Rodriguez each accounted for eight points as the the Lady Steers got back on the right side of the win column after back-to-back losses against Odessa High and Lamesa.

“It was a good non-district game,” Head Coach Mike Warren said. “It was good to get a win after losing the last two games.”

Containing Tuitt has been a priority for opposing teams.

Forsan falls to Quanah 41-6

November 17, 2012

CLYDE — Brendan Roman, senior running back for Forsan picked up a Quanah fumble at the one-yard line and ran it in for a 99-yard touchdown early in the first quarter during the Buffaloes (6-5) bi-district outing against the 8-3 Indians on Friday.

Unfortunately for the Buffs, a holding penalty caused the score to be recalled.

That would set the tone of Forsan's season-ending, 41-6 loss. Five interceptions and a lost fumble coupled with costly penalties proved insurmountable for Head Coach Jason Phillips' squad.

Grady avenges loss to Ropes in playoff opener

November 17, 2012

ACKERLY — Grady (8-3) opened its season with back-to-back losses, including a narrow, 56-48 defeat at the hands of the Ropes Eagles (7-4) in the Wildcats first game of the year.

After winning six of its last seven regular season games, Grady — under the tutelage of first year Head Coach Chris Kuykendal — met Ropes once again Friday in the first round of postseason action.

This time, a much-improved Wildcat squad upended the Eagles in a convincing, 80-56 win.
