Coahoma High School head coach Trey Gardner and Forsan head coach Jason Phillips had a lot in common on Friday night as they watched their two teams square off in season-opening “Howard Bowl.” Both were less than pleased with the way their team’s played. Mistakes. Turnovers. Penalties. Missed opportunities. In the end, however, Gardner had a little less to be unhappy about.
Steers win season opener in dramatic fashion with a 41-yard "Hail Mary" pass in the end zone as time expires.
MONAHANS – The Big Spring High School defense had every chance in the world to fold up like a cheap suit on Friday night in front of a large crowd at Estes Memorial Stadium. Sure. At times, they were pushed around more than a lawnmower in Florida as they gave up 364 yards. Sure. They got a little help from the officiating crew that overturned a fourth-quarter touchdown that would have given the Loboes a lead with just ovet 2 minutes to play.
Kyler Franks and Joseph Melendez both rushed for a pair of touchdowns and helped the Bulldogs reel off a convincing 38-7 rout of the McCamey Badgers on Friday in front of a large crowd at Bulldog Stadium.
Jesse Cervantes rushed for three touchdowns on Friday night and helped the Forsan Buffaloes scratch their way into the win column with a dominating 57-0 rout of the Plains Cowboys.

All three sophomores played crucial roles this past season for the Hawks, who advanced to the second round of the Region V tournament before falling to McLennan Community College.

Forsan baseball, Coahoma softball teams make playoffs

April 26, 2011

COLORADO CITY — New year, new classification, same postseason hopes for the Forsan Buffaloes.

The Buffaloes clinched a spot in the Class 2A state high school baseball playoffs with a 12-5 victory over Colorado City Monday afternoon.

Forsan came into the game needing a win to hold off Coahoma for the final District 3-2A playoff spot. A loss to C-City would have dropped the Buffs into a tie with Coahoma and forced a one-game playoff between the teams.

Howard cowgirl qualifies for CNFR

April 26, 2011

After a 12-year drought, a Howard College cowgirl will be representing the school at the College National Finals rodeo.

Hawk barrel racer Kaci Smith became the first Howard cowgirl to claim a spot in the CNFR since 1999, when Kim Green brought home the Reserve National Champion award in barrel racing.

“Kaci is doing what Kaci does best right now,” said Greg Kernick, Howard College rodeo coach. “She’s done a great job throughout the entire season and has peaked at just the right time.”

April 20, 2011

Forsan and Coahoma High School tennis players have taken a variety of routes to today's Region I-2A Tennis Tournament in Odessa.

For Forsan's doubles team of Cheyenne Galloway and Rachael Haggard, success came much quicker.

And for Forsan singles players Kyle Stevenson and Sydney Holdampf, the trip to the regional tournament is just one more highlight in a season full of them.

Idle Lady Steers clinch playoff spot

April 20, 2011

After an up-and-down season, perhaps it was appropriate that the Big Spring Lady Steers earned a spot in the state softball playoffs by doing … nothing.

The Lady Steers, who were idle Tuesday, earned the third and final postseason berth from District 5-3A by virtue of Brownwood's 19-7 win over Abilene Wylie. If Wylie had defeated Brownwood, it would have ended the season tied with Big Spring and forced an extra game with the Lady Steers to determine the district's final playoff representative.
