Steers display athleticism in 69-33 rout of Fort Stockton

November 17, 2010

Cliff Thompson joked that right now would be a good time to retire. After all, he would retire undefeated as the Big Spring boys’ basketball coach at 1-0.

Then he quickly noted that winning just feels too good.
The Steers upended Fort Stockton for a season-opening 69-33 for Thompson’s first win as Big Spring’s head coach. If the Steers can continue to improve, Thompson just might have the chance to get used to winning.

Fort Stockton on tap for Lady Steers

November 16, 2010

It’s all about consistently gaining confidence as the Big Spring girls basketball team approaches tournaments in December and district play in January.

As far away as that seems, every game until then counts.

“I think the last two years we’ve been playing with younger girls,” Big Spring head coach Mike Warren said. “Last year they competed at a high level and I think it’s time for them to start enjoying some of the rewards of that hard work we’ve been doing for two years.”

Girls basketball: Lady Buffs face road test against Grady

November 16, 2010

FORSAN — The Forsan girls’ basketball team got the win in its season opener against Garden City, but head coach Robert Hillger is hoping the jitters his players had in that first game are nowhere to be found tonight.

The Lady Buffs are on the road against Grady at 4 p.m. today in Lenorah. They’re coming off a close 39-37 win against Garden City.
That game was good for the Lady Buffs, however. Hillger said a lot of lessons come from close games.

Girls basketball: Lady Steers cruise past Cooper 45-35

November 15, 2010

All the Big Spring Lady Steers needed was a spark to fend off Abilene Cooper in a 45-35 win Saturday in Steer Gym.

The Lady Steers’ mishaps and turnovers prevented them from gaining a substantial lead over Cooper, but they were in a tied game 24-24 as the third quarter was coming to an end.

That spark they needed came in the form of a 10-2 run, thanks to clutch shooting from Cerbi Ritchey, Valerie Ross and Mackenzie Stone.

Spearman’s Meddock, defense ends CHS’ season

November 14, 2010

PLAINVIEW — By the middle of Coahoma’s bi-district playoffs game against Spearman Friday in Plainview, the Bulldogs knew if they were going to win, it was going to be in comeback fashion.

All the pieces started fitting together for that to happen, too. Jason Martinez punched the ball in for a score to cut the Lynx lead to 13, Coahoma’s defense forced a three-and-out on the next drive and suddenly, the Bulldogs were driving down the field for a second score.

Fulton leads Stanton past Abernathy

November 14, 2010

SEMINOLE — Stanton is known for defense and physical play in the trenches.

The Buffaloes still had that in their 30-6 win over Abernathy Friday in Seminole in bi-district playoff action. They just had the passing to go along with it.

“We didn’t know what to expect in a first-round playoff game,” Stanton head coach John Peterson said. “Everybody’s hungry to stay in the playoffs. Abernathy did a great job of trying to take away our run, so we adjusted a little bit, started throwing the ball.”

Ira’s Morris too much for Grady Wildcats in 56-43 loss

November 14, 2010

The Grady Wildcats knew they had to accomplish two things in order to win their six-man playoff game with Ira — they had to capitalize on their scoring opportunities and they had to contain Ira’s Lance Morris.

Unfortunately for the ‘Cats, they didn’t succeed on either front and ended up dropping a 56-43 decision Friday night in Memorial Stadium.

GCHS ousts Robert Lee in bi-district action

November 12, 2010

ROBERT LEE — When Robert Lee’s Foster Allen caught a 6-yard pass from Justin Gartman to give the Steers a 16-14 lead over defending state champion Garden City, the emotion and excitement was clear on their sideline.

But the composure and calmness was evident on Garden City’s sideline.
Thanks to key picks, big runs from Josh Colunga and a stout second-half defensive performance, the Bearkats fought off an early rally from Robert Lee to thump the Steers 66-20 in bi-district playoff action Thursday in Robert Lee.

Coahoma attempts to erase recent playoff woes

November 12, 2010

COAHOMA — Coahoma head coach Trey Gardner describes playoff time like some children describe their favorite holiday.

After all, he has said making it to the playoffs is like Christmas coming early for him.

But the Bulldogs are hoping the joy doesn’t end so soon when they take on Spearman in bi-district playoff action at 8 p.m. today in Plainview.
Coahoma’s last appearance in the playoffs was in 2007, but their last win was in 2003.

For many years, the Coahoma and Forsan football teams did the unthinkable – they decided the “...
