Steers begin playoffs today against Pecos

After finishing off its regular season with a pair of meaningless losses to Sweetwater and Snyder, Big Spring will amp up its attack this afternoon when they square off against the Pecos Eagles in the bi-district round of the boys’ Class 3A state playoffs. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Permian High School gymnasium in Odessa.

Odessa outlasts Lady Hawks

The Odessa College Lady Wranglers came into Monday’s showdown with the Howard College Hawks figuring they should have an easy win. They were, after all, playing at home and facing a Howard College team that was ranked in the lower half of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference standings.
How wrong were they.

Big Spring powerlifters shine at Mustang Power Classic in Sweetwater

The Big Spring boys’ and girls’ powerlifting teams both turned in solid outings on Thursday at the annual Mustang Power Classic in Sweetwater. Both BSHS squads placed in the top 10 in their respective divisions.

Levelland ends Lady Steers’ playoff run

Levelland, backed by a 25-2 run to start the game, ended the Lady Steers’ 2013-14 season on Friday in front of a large crowd in the Post High School gymnasium by racing to a 51-21 victory in a Class 3A Area round playoff.

The Howard College Lady Hawks found the perfect way to celebrate their open date on the Western Junior College Athletic Conference schedule. They beat up on the Southwest Texas Junior College Cowgirls in a non-conference matchup.

Lady Hawks end slump in OT

Sarah Stinnett has rebounded plenty of basketballs during the season for the Howard College Lady Hawks. None, however, were quite as important as the one she grabbed with 1:19 left in overtime on Thursday night in front of a large crowd in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
With the game tied at 54-54 in overtime, Stinnett pulled are bound out of the air and raced to the other end of the floor before dishing the ball to freshman Bailey Wipff, who was immediately fouled.

Big Spring lands 4 on TSWA All-State squad

The Big Spring High School Steers placed four players on the 63rd Annual Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A All-State Football Team, which was released this morning. Among the players named to the squad were Shaiem Menefield, Devin Roberson, Tate Kennedy and Tobyn Tannehill.

Following the Howard College Hawks’ practice session on Wednesday, head coach Scott Raines didn’t act like a coach whose team had won 20 games and was fighting for a berth in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. To be sure, he wasn’t not happy at his team’s effort. The proverbial dog house was getting crowded, he admitted.

Lady Bulldogs edge past Sterling City, 50-48

The Ira High School Lady Bulldogs added some precious metal to their trophy case on Wednesday night by grabbing a thrilling 40-48 win over the Sterling City Lady Eagles in a Class A bi-district playoff game played in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
The win was anything but easy.
