Nadine Hodnett celebrates her 100th birthday

Nadine Hodnett celebrated her 100th birthday at the Park View Nursing Home Wednesday with family and friends. A lifelong resident of Texas, she has lived in Howard County since 1930. Her grandfather Alex Haynes came to Big Spring in 1904 and bought a section of land four miles north of town while her parents raised nine children in Fluvana. Her father, Henry Haynes was stationmaster for the Roscoe, Snyder and Pacific Railroad and her brothers farmed the section of land where they lived. Upon graduating from high school in Fluvana, she attended San Antonio Teachers College and got her teaching credential.
She met her future husband, Merle, while interviewing with his father, Frank Hodnett, a Howard County Commissioner and president of the school board of Knott. She was hired and taught all the grades in the one-room school house for several years. About her courtship, she recalls Merle commenting, “You would make someone a good wife.” Her reply was, “How about you?” He obviously agreed because they were married on Thanksgiving Day 1932 in the Methodist Parsonage in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
They raised three children in Big Spring. When the chidren went to college it seems they got stuck in the A section of their college catalogs. They all got degrees; Karen (Madry) in accounting, Rick in agriculture and Haley in architecture.
Nadine is a member of the First Methodist Church was active in service organizations and manned the polls each election until her physical condition restricted her to a wheelchair. She has survived all her brothers and sisters and enjoys participating in the family newsletter that is circulated among her nieces and nephews.
