By foot, stroller, pedal and motor power, Highland South's smallest residents showed their their patriotism in colorful ways Wednesday.

The 45th Annual Highland South Fourth of July Parade attracted more than 30 entries this year. That number was down slightly from 2011, but Parade Coordinator Melanie Lawdermilk said the quality of the entries was as strong as ever.

Lawdermilk credited her fellow volunteers with helping make the event a success.

“I think it went really smoothly this year,” she said. “We had a lot of good helpers … We had a lot of good cookies and refreshments for everyone to enjoy after the parade; there's a group of ladies who have been doing that for years. Overall, I thought things went really well.”
