Mr. and Mrs. Edward Slate celebrate 50 years of marriage

Edward and Jean Slate will celebrate their 50th anniversary March 24 with a family gathering in the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Randy Elder of McKinney. Also hosting the event will be their son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Kim Slate of Burleson. Unable to attend are their younger son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Ruth Slate, Mandeville La.  The Slates have been blessed with 10 grandchildren, five boys and five girls.
Edward was born to Jim and Lizzie Belle Slate in Coleman, Texas. Jean was born in Longview, Texas, to Lee and Carol Hammon. Her step-parents were Leo Hull and Genevieve Hammon.
The couple grew up and attended school in Big Spring. Edward graduated in 1957, and Jean graduated in 1960. They met in 1961 when Edward returned home after completing three years in Germany with the U.S. Army. They were married March 24, 1962, at East Fourth Street Baptist Church with Brother Billy Rudd officiating and have lived in Big Spring all their married life except for a brief time in McKinney.
Edward worked for Texas Electric Service Company, Pioneer Natural Gas and retired in March 1998 after working for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 33 years. Jean worked for the Department of Labor and Webb AFB before attending Howard County Junior College and Angelo State College, graduating in 1971 with a B.S. in Education. She taught in Big Spring Independent School District for 27 years.
They enjoy being outdoors, participating in 5K races, visiting with family and friends, traveling and updating old houses.
Edward and Jean have served at East Fourth Street Baptist Church and Berea Baptist Church as members and Sunday School teachers. Their comment after 50 years of marriage is “We thank the Lord for His goodness and patience with us. We’re excited about the future.”
