9/11 ceremony set Tuesday at mall

September 10, 2012

Crossroads area residents have an opportunity to honor fallen heroes Tuesday with the fifth 9/11 ceremony at the Big Spring Mall.
More than 250 people attended the brief ceremony last year. This year's ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Special speaker will be Big Spring resident two-star General Major Eddy Spurgin. Other local dignitaries will participate.
Mike Tarpley, Vietnam veteran who has conducted each of the 9/11 ceremonies, said it is crucial we remember our veterans and what they have done.
“Every soldier who has served in combat knows the fear of 'If I die, will I be forgotten' and this is a way to tell them 'no they wont be forgotten'— as long as I have anything to do with it.”
“We remember these men and women one day a year, but their families remember them every day,” Tarpley said. “That is just one of the many reasons we need to keep this going.
