Abner Shellman Sr.

Abner Shellman Sr., 68, of Big Spring died Saturday, April 20, 2013, in Midland Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.

He was born March 18, 1945, in Anson, Texas, to Mamie and John Shellman. He attended McMurry University in Abilene. He was a veteran of the Army, having served in Vietnam. He was a member of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and active member.

He is survived by two sons, 1st Sgt. Shawn D. Shellman of El Paso and Abner Shellman Jr. of Dothan, Ala.; seven daughters, Syreeta D. Shellman, Taylisa Cork, Latresa Brown and Aretha Cork, all of Abilene, Sabrina Shellman of Sweetwater, Jacobie Shellman of Dallas and Chiquinda Shellman of Jackson, Miss.; one brother, Buford L. Shellman and wife Dee of Anson; three sisters, Gilletta Gort of Dallas, Loretta Booker and husband Eddie of Waco and Joan Knight and husband Leon of Inglewood, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Shellman and A.L. Shellman; three sisters, Betty L. Boyce, Eva Sims and Mozelle Craven; and one son.
