Annual stargazing party Saturday

June 24, 2011

Area stargazers will have plenty to look at Saturday when the Big Spring State Park holds its annual Stargazing Party atop the historic Scenic Mountain.

Park Manager Ron Alton said there will be several interesting heavenly bodies in view when he and members of the West Texas Amateur Astronomy Club turn their eyes — and telescopes — skyward.

“There are a number of nebulas (star clusters) in view Saturday,” he said. “Alberio (the fifth brightest star in the constellation Cygnus), M10, M12, M1, M92, M23, M19, M4 and M5. Saturn will also be in view, as well as M92, M81 and M82. Other sightings could include the Space Station, or Iridium Flares.”

Alton said the stargazing event is expected to begin just after sundown.
