Aquatic center dedication Wednesday

May 20, 2013

The public is invited to the dedication of the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center Wednesday morning.

The center will be renamed in honor of the former Big Spring mayor during ceremonies scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

City officials and members of McEwen's family are expected to attend the event.

Debbie Wegman, director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, said Wednesday's dedication will not mark the opening of the center for the summer.

“There will only be a very short dedication ceremony,” Wegman said. “We will have our annual Splash-In event May 25 … and the center will open to the public on June 1.”

Wegman said the dedication is a way to honor McEwen's contributions to establishing the center.

“Mayor McEwen was instrumental in bringing the Family Aquatic Center to our community,” she said. “His entire adult life, including the 10 years that he served as mayor, was dedicated to improving Big Spring, both for the youth of the community and for all of our citizens.”
