Area basketball: Coahoma, Forsan, Stanton girls begin district play today

December 7, 2010

Big Spring boys
Greenwood avenged a loss to Big Spring in Andrews, so the Steers will look to get back on track with a win at Abilene Cooper at 7:30 p.m. today. Luke Adams is gaining a reputation as the Steers’ go-to player. Head coach Cliff Thompson said opponents are starting to key in on Adams. The senior and Tristain Clay have led Big Spring in scoring so far this season.

Big Spring girls
Head coach Mike Warren and the Lady Steers are at home against Pecos at 7:30 p.m. today in Steer Gym. Pecos may have a hard time handling Cerbi Ritchey in the post. The junior, along with Diamond Mayes, has been tough to slow down lately. Add Mackenzie Stone’s ability to shoot from the 3-point line and the Lady Steers have a dangerous combination. Big Spring is 7-2 on the season.

Coahoma girls
Fresh off a win over Iraan in the tournament at Crane, the Coahoma Bulldogettes begin District 3-2A play against Denver City at 6 p.m. today in Denver City.
At 6-3, the Bulldogettes have been led by the likes of Jennifer Castliaw, Joanna Gonzales, Lynzi Ferrell and Minnie Goodblanket.

Forsan girls
The Forsan Lady Buffs also begin District 3-2A play with Lubbock Roosevelt at 5 p.m. today in Forsan. Head coach Robert Hillger believes his team has been playing well leading up to district play, despite coming off a loss to Sands in the Booster Club Klassic in Garden City this weekend. Ambra Hill has been a mainstay in the backcourt, but Morgan Forshee, Shelby Roemer and Miranda Park have been key as well.

Grady’s boys and girls basketball teams are in action against Ira starting at 5 p.m. today in Lenorah. The boys are fresh off a first-place finish at the Booster Club Klassic in Garden City, beating Forsan 63-52.

Garden City
Both the boys and girls’ basketball teams for Garden City will be in Big Lake for games against Reagan County starting at 6:30 p.m. for the Lady Kats and 8 p.m. for the Bearkats.

Sands boys/Stanton boys
The Sands Mustangs make a trip to Stanton today to take on the Buffaloes. The Mustangs main objective might be slowing down Tyler Fulton, who is Stanton’s leading scorer.
Stanton girls
The Stanton Lady Buffs also open district play against Slaton today in Stanton.
