Area basketball roundup: BSHS boys face Permian, Coahoma girls in action

November 19, 2010

Big Spring vs. Odessa Permian
- 7:30 p.m., today, Big Spring
First-year Big Spring boys basketball head coach Cliff Thompson got his first win at the helm in Tuesday’s 69-33 rout of Fort Stockton. Now, a second one would be even better. The Steers will depend on a good mix of athleticism in tonight’s matchup. Tristain Clay and Luke Adams were the high scorers for the Steers in the season opener, with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs canceled games against Reagan County and Wall to gain some extra rest, considering nine players on the roster recently finished football season. Their first game is against Kermit at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Kermit.

Big Spring vs. Lamesa
- 7:30 p.m., today, Lamesa
It’s the second road test for the Lady Steers as they take their 3-0 start to Lamesa. Big Spring has been dangerous in the post with Cerbi Ritchey and Diamond Mayes, among others, but maybe what’s stolen the show is the perimeter shooting. Mackenzie Stone has hit three 3-pointers in all three games this season and Valerie Ross came on in the 60-18 win over Fort Stockton with four. Warren previously said he hopes Big Spring can be dangerous in the post and from the 3-point line, forcing opponents to choose which one they want to cover.

Coahoma vs. Garden City
- 6:30 p.m., today, Coahoma
The Bulldogettes are off to an 0-2 start, but first-year head coach Mitzi Bell believes it’s worth mentioning both came to strong and talented teams. Jim Ned and Big Lake Reagan County are two of the best in the area. So, Coahoma will go for its first win of the season at home against Garden City. Bell noted the Lady Kats lost a close 39-37 game to Forsan — a district opponent — so this will be a good measuring stick.
Bell is hanging her hat on starting the season against tough opponents. She believes it’s going to make a difference by the time district play rolls around.
