SAN ANGELO ‚ÄĒ The Lady Steers (5-4) have been victorious in two-out-of-three games at the Doug McCutchen Basketball Tournament in San Angelo as of press time. Big Spring opened the tourney Thursday with a 48-44 loss to Midland Classical Academy, but had a chance to win in the fourth period as they outscored the Lady Knights 16-11 and trailed by a single point before MCA sealed the game.
Leading the Lady Steers in scoring was Dyrshae Vanderbilt with 14 points. Logan Yarbar added eight points and Yaneira Tuitt chipped in seven.
Vanderbilt contributed 10 points to help guide BSHS to a win 31-25 defeat of Andrews Thursday afternoon.
Friday, the Lady Steers downed Odessa High in a convincing 44-35 outing putting them in a position to go home with a top three finish depending on the outcome of Saturday's afternoon game against Odessa Permian, who BSHS Head Coach Mike Warren believes is the team to beat.
‚ÄúWe will be playing for first, second or third place,‚ÄĚ Warren said. ‚Äú(Permian) is probably the best team here. Hopefully, by playing these bigger schools it will help us down the road in district.‚ÄĚ
Vanderbilt accounted for 13 points against Permian and Yarbar added 10.
‚ÄúOur guards are playing better,‚ÄĚ Warren added. ‚ÄúWe are shooting better from the outside and that's what we needed to do. We have had the zone run on us three times. Yarbar had a really good game ‚ÄĒ when our guards play well, it gives a chance to win from the start.‚ÄĚ
Saturday's game was slated fro 3:15 p.m. against the Permian Lady Panthers. Results will be in Monday's edition of the Herald.
The Steers lost 62-39 against Bastrop on Thursday in their tournament opener. Tyler Graves led BSHS with 10 points. No further information was available at press time.
GARDEN CITY ‚ÄĒ The Bearkat Booster Club Klassic basketball tourney is underway. Five area teams ‚ÄĒ Garden City, Grady, Stanton, Coahoma and Forsan are participating in this year's hoops event.
The Forsan Buffaloes lost to the Stanton Buffaloes 54-48. Tyler Evans had 12 points, Zane Sanders and Aric Hernandez added nine points apeice, Kade Fannin chipped in six points, J.T. Breyman and Dillon Bagnall each had five and Jerol Womack added two.
Forsan is slated to meet Coahoma on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Results will be on Monday's edition of the Herald.
The Lady Buffaloes won their first two games at the tourney after a 56-49 win over Lubbock High and a 57-35 rout of Stanton.
Over the course of the two games, Ali Knight led FHS with 28 points, Reagan Haggard added 27, Maria Ortiz and Mary Ashley McDaniel each contributed 14 points, Jahnia Willard and Elizabeth Rhodes both tossed up 11 and Brittney Hergert chipped in six.
GARDEN CITY ‚ÄĒ The Bulldogs (4-1) fell to Grady 62-54 in Game One of the Garden City Bearkat Booster Club Klassic Tournament on Thursday. Grady's E.J. Rodriguez put up 26 points while Brandon Lucas had 12.
Coahoma's Tanner Ruiz had 21 points for the Bulldogs, while Alex Hill added 15, Armani Guillama had 10 rebounds and seven points and Shanen Warneke had eight rebounds.
Coahoma took its second game against Klondike 43-39. Hill had 15 points, Namen McCullough hit 12 and Braxton Iden contributed with nine rebounds.
Coahoma will meet Forsan on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Results will be published in Monday's edition of the Herald.
