Area playoffs: 'Kats face undefeated Ira Saturday in Big Spring

November 26, 2010

GARDEN CITY — On Monday, all the hoopla from the Garden City Bearkats' emotional playoff win against Borden County was over. Head coach Vance Jones made sure of that.

“We’re already past that. We’ve already celebrated that,” Jones said. “We’re focused on the next challenge.”

The players have apparently heard Jones’ message and should take it seriously, considering another undefeated team will be across the field at 6 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Big Spring.

The Bearkats face Ira in the quarterfinals of the University Interscholastic League state six-man football playoffs and a 26-game winning streak is on the line for Garden City. Ira is 12-0.

The Borden County game in the regional round was nothing short of a classic, just like the regular-season meeting between the two teams. Both squads went back and forth and a fumbled snap on a conversion attempt to tie the game at 44 with 22 seconds left gave Garden City the win.

While the Bearkats are putting that game behind them and focusing on Ira, they do admit going through games like the one against Borden County help make this group better.

“The emotion from last week, a lot of it carries over,” Ian Schaefer said. “Whenever we win a big game like that, we just want to keep on going. You can’t let all the emotion and shock from last week effect how you play the following week. You have to take it just as serious.”
