Officials with the Big Spring Fire Department say the fire reported at the Fourth Street Dairy Queen late Tuesday night was set to cover up a burglary at the local restaurant.
Big Spring Fire Marshall Carl Condray said the fire, which was reported just after 11 p.m., has been ruled arson, an apparent attempt by the thief to cover his or her tracks.
“The fire was definitely set, and it looks like it was done so to cover up the burglary of the restaurant,” Condray said. “Right now it's hard to tell exactly what is missing and what was destroyed in the fire, but several items have already been identified as missing.
“The fire started in a store room in the building. There's extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the restaurant, however, we haven't been able to put a dollar amount to it just yet. I can tell you, however, that it will be substantial.”
Condray said it took firefighters a short period of time to get the fire out.
