Avery's late 3 lifts Grady past Borden County
The Grady Lady Wildcats pose with their trophy after a thrilling, 58-55 playoff win over Borden County on Tuesday.
SEMINOLE â It was a tight game from the opening buzzer between Grady and Borden County on Tuesday, but a late three-pointer by Ellyn Avery lifted the Lady Wildcats past the Lady Coyotes, 58-55.
Tied at the half, Grady outscored Borden County 13-9 in the third quarter, but the Lady Coyotes rallied back in the fourth. Avery sank the game-winning basket â a 25 footer â with only six seconds left on the clock. Borden County managed to get off a shot, but Grady got the rebound as time expired.
âIt was a great battle,â Grady Head Coach Jimmy Avery said. âIt was two good 1A teams that fought hard until the end. We just happened to hit one more shot than they did.â
Avery put up a game-high 29 points, while Cayley Oppegard added 12 in the battle.
â(Avery) came through for us last night,â Avery said. âShe was a great leader out there for us, but she had a lot of help. It was a great team effort.â
The Lady Wildcats (27-5), will be traveling to Levelland on Friday where they will meet Whitharral. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at South Plains College.
There is an interesting plot line behind the Grady-Withtharral game â Whitharral is Avery's alma mater. But with a state run in his sights, Avery is confident in his squad.
âIf we shoot the ball well, we have a chance against anybody,â he added. âEverybody's good now. Every team knows how to do the little things it takes to be successful. Whitharral has all seniors, but we have confidence, we have played a lot of tough teams this year. We aren't afraid of anyone.â
