Strike up the (award-winning) band.
The Big Spring High School band, fresh off another sweepstakes award winning performance, will hold a free public concert at 2 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium.
The program will feature both the BSHS Honor Band and Symphonic Band, which recently competed in the University Interscholastic League Band Contest in Odessa.
The BSHS Honor Band under Rocky Harris won sweepstakes honors by earning Division I ratings in both concert and sight-reading at contest, coupled with the Division I rating earned in marching last November. In addition, the Symphonic Band, directed by Sam Hale, earned a Division I award in concert to add some more hardware to the band's trophy case.
This marks at least the 10th straight year the band has earned sweepstakes honors, Harris said.
“This is by far one of the best-playing bands we've had,” he said. “Their performance at concert contest was amazing.”
In addition, the band qualified for the state wind ensemble competition, which is scheduled to be held at the University of Texas in Austin May 4.
Sunday's concert will include music from the bands' contest entries, as well as other selections. The highlight, Harris said, will be a performance featuring a trumpet solo by John Ontiveros. Harris said the piece was commissioned for the band.
