Barzie Ray Fletcher passed away June 29 at the House of Hope. He was 87 years old â€” born Aug. 11, 1926.
He was born in Coahoma, Texas, to the late Carl and Velma Fletcher. He was preceded in death by a sister, a brother and one daughter, Judy Lyn Creel.
He graduated from Coahoma High School in 1943. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and discharged in 1947. He was the office manager for Hemphill-Wells stores in Big Spring and San Angelo. In 1986 he took early retirement when Hemphill-Wells stores were bought by Dillardâ€™s. In addition to enjoying music, Barzie had become interested in genealogy.
In addition to his wife, Louise of 63 years, Barzie was survived by a daughter, Cheryl Spradling of Arlington, Texas; a son Bennett W. Fletcher, M.D. and Mary Beth of Bethesda, Md.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are planned for Saturday, July 19 at 2 p.m. at Johnsonâ€™s Funeral Home Chapel, 435 West Beauregard Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Meals For the Elderly, 310 E. Houston-Harte, San Angelo, TX 76903.
