Benefit planned for area firefighters

July 9, 2011

It's not a surprise local firefighters have been busy this year.
Due to all the grassfires, especially the most recent Boykin Road Fire and South Mountain Fire, the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department, surrounding county volunteer fire departments, Big Spring Fire Department and Texas Forest Service have been putting in long hours to ensure the safety of Crossroads residents.
In honor of all their hard work, numerous people and organizations have joined together to put on a Firemen Benefit, Auction and Dance.
“Iva Jo Hanslik presented this idea to the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce board members and all were in support of the idea,” said Debbye ValVerde, chamber executive director.
The benefit will take place at the Howard County Fairbarn Aug. 27, starting at 5 p.m. It will be in honor of all firefighters in Howard, Glasscock, Martin and Mitchell counties.
“We all know how hard our firefighters have been working and the surrounding counties have come and helped us out as well as we've gone to help them out in their county's fires,” ValVerde said. “This is just a way of saying thank you.”
All firefighters are encouraged to bring their families and the community is invited to come out, support and say thank you. There will be no ticket needed for the event and no door charge, but a Fill the Boot Donation will be taken. The money raised from that will benefit the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department, according to ValVerde.
A Firemen's Benefit Fund has been set up at State National Bank, account number 3490645, for those wanting to donate funds for the benefit. Any and all Crossroads residents who would like to donate food, auction items or monetary donations are encouraged to do so.
“Auction items, as long as they can fit through the door, will be taken at the chamber office,” ValVerde said.
Noel Olivas and band will be providing the entertainment for the dance. The benefit is a joint effort between numerous individuals, the chamber and Birdwell Lane Baptist Church, Trinity Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and College Baptist Church.
To find out more information or to donate food, call Rob Dalsing at 973-714-4572. To donate an auction item stop by the chamber or contact Iva Jo Hanslik at 432-466-1496 or Debra Wallace at 417-274-0473.
