Big Spring High School's golf squad (from left) Jason Guevara, Tyler Bryan, Tate Kennedy, Ryan Pollard and Devin Roberson will be traveling to Austin May 3-4 to compete at the state championship. This is the first time in 21 years that a BSHS team has qualified.
Big Spring High School's 21-year drought is over. That's how long it has been since a BSHS golf squad has made an appearance at the state golf tournament.
The Jimmy Clay Golf Course ‚ÄĒ one of the toughest in the state ‚ÄĒ in Austin awaits the team. As well as the top high school golfers in the state.
But if you ask Coach Chris Joslin, he would tell you that this is a special year on the links for the Steers golfers.
‚ÄúAll of the kids played really well all year,‚ÄĚ Joslin said. It's an exciting time for Big Spring. We feel like all five guys are going to compete.‚ÄĚ
They better, if they plan on taking on the state's best such as regional champs Andrews and reigning state champions Prosper.
Despite the challenges that lie ahead, the pressure doesn't seem to be bothering Joslin or his golfers. In fact, the focus is on having fun.
‚ÄúThat's what I have been preaching,‚ÄĚ Joslin explained. We play better golf when we are enjoying it. We might as well relax. All eight teams can play. It's going to come down to who gets hot and plays well that week.‚ÄĚ
The kids are following Joslin's advice.
‚ÄúI think we can go down there and compete with the other teams,‚ÄĚ said junior Jason Guevara. ‚ÄúMy philosophy is to have fun, I never feel pressure when I am out there. It's about having fun.‚ÄĚ
The confidence is also there, according to sophomore Devin Roberson whose hot streak helped lead the Steers through regional play after a subpar performance the first round.
‚ÄúI intend to carry that momentum into state,‚ÄĚ Roberson said. "I have been focused on hitting the fairways and hitting the greens. We have the ability to go down there and play with anybody.‚ÄĚ
On a team with no returning seniors, at least one golfer ‚ÄĒ Tate Kennedy ‚ÄĒ wasn't sure if BSHS would make it past regionals earlier in the season..
‚ÄúI never underestimated the talent,‚ÄĚ Kennedy said. ‚ÄúBut we were a younger team. We set goals. We had to put some confidence in our team.‚ÄĚ
The tournament in Austin is slated for May 3-4. The Steers will tee off that Thursday at approximately 8 a.m.
