It's all about the dogs at this show.
The Big Spring Kennel Club Dog Show is at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum through Sunday. The show starts at 9 a.m., breaks for lunch and picks back up at 12:45 p.m. with group judging.
Dog owners and breeders have gathered in Big Spring for the 41st annual dog show. There were 280 dogs from Texas, 31 from New Mexico, 10 from Oklahoma and countless others from as far away as Connecticut, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Michigan, Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington.
“We continue to bring this show to Big Spring so that locals don't have to travel to show their dog,” June Moore, show chairman, said.
According to Moore, the only other dog shows in West Texas are Lubbock and Midland. Each show only happens once a year, but provides a great opportunity for the public to come out and learn about specific breeds.
“We encourage anyone who loves dogs to come out here and see the show, speak with the breeders and learn a little bit more about the dogs,” Moore said.
This year's entries to the dog show are up from last year, but are still lower than previous years. The economy and price of gasoline and other travel expenses have caused the decrease in participants.
“We want people to get out and do things with their dogs,” Moore said. “It's better for the owner and the dogs to not just have the dogs put away outside.”
