Big Spring hoops teams win at home

November 21, 2012

Big Spring's Yaneira Tuitt goes for a lay-up during Tuesday's 49-31 win over Andrews.

Both Big Spring varsity basketball squads won last night at home.

The Lady Steers defeated Andrews 49-31 to improve to 3-2.

Yaneira Tuitt led BSHS with 18 points and five rebounds. Dyrshae Vanderbilt and sophomore Julianna Rodriguez each accounted for eight points as the the Lady Steers got back on the right side of the win column after back-to-back losses against Odessa High and Lamesa.

“It was a good non-district game,” Head Coach Mike Warren said. “It was good to get a win after losing the last two games.”

Containing Tuitt has been a priority for opposing teams.

“Teams are running 2-3 zone on us,” Warren explained. “They're packing the defense in on Tuitt. Our guards are shooting better from the outside and we put more points on the board. That's good, our past games have been in the 30s.”

The boys team notched a 64-58 win over Lubbock High. The 2-1 Steers jumped out to an early lead and LHS couldn't overcome the deficit.

Tavaris Walker was the Steers' leading scorer with 17 points, including three 3-point shots. Ty Sealy contributed 14 points and Tyler Wigington added nine.

Big Spring hoops will resume the Monday after Thanksgiving break. The Steers will be traveling to San Angelo Central while the girls will host Seminole.
