Not only did the Big Spring Senior League All-Stars win the District 3 All-Star Tournament after a 13-8 victory over Midland High on Saturday at Steer Park, they went undefeated against the best lineups in the region throughout the week.
Trevor Williams started on the mound for Big Spring in the championship game, with the offense quickly racking up three runs to back him up. Gary Watkins came in to relieve Williams when a run was walked in during the top of the third, but Midland got to Watkins as well and took a 4-3 lead.
Big Spring got out of the inning with a one-run deficit as Midland left the bases loaded.
Watkins and Garrett Kligora led off the bottom-half of the inning with back-to-back walks, Braden East reached on a fielder's choice and Jeremy Cervantes hit a sacrifice fly, knotting the game at four runs apiece.
Big Spring would regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Pearson picked up a two-out single. Jacob Valdez recorded a RBI, Watkins drew another walk, Kligora was hit by a pitch and with bases loaded, East belted a two-run single, bringing the score to 7-4 in Big Spring's favor.
Midland fought back, holding Big Spring while adding three runs over the next two innings to tie the game at seven.
The win was sealed in the bottom of the sixth.
Pearson led off big again, hitting a triple and was knocked in by Valdez, who had a base hit, but was retired trying to stretch the single into a double. Watkins was issued yet another walk, Kligora was hit by a pitch and East came through with the insurance, this time recording a two-run triple, then scoring on an error during Cervantes' next at-bat. Big Spring would score twice more in the inning, putting the game out of reach for Midland, which only scored once more in their final at-bat after a pair of bad throws in the field by Big Spring.
The win advanced Big Spring to the state sectional tournament, which will be held in Childress this coming weekend. Game times were unavailable at press time, but will be announced this week.View more articles in:
