The first quarter of Tuesday's District 5-3A basketball game between Sweetwater and Big Spring featured five lead changes and ended with the visitors up by just a point, 11-10.

Midway through the second quarter, it was still a contest as the Mustangs trailed by just three (17-14). But the Steers caught fire at that point, going on a 15-1 run to lead by 17, 32-15, at halftime, and never looked back en route to a 64-35 win at Mustang Gym.

Big Spring (1-1, 11-14) was deadly from 3-point range all night, making 11 of their attempts to none for Sweetwater. Junior Ty'ral Menefield was the deadliest, making four treys and scoring a game-high 24 points.
Meanwhile, Sweetwater shot just 21 percent (10 of 47) from the field as it fell to 0-2 in district and 9-16 overall. Big Spring took advantage to lead 56-21 after three periods, until the Mustangs rallied slightly to cut the Steers' final victory margin to 29.

"I'd like to know what their shooting percentage was. They couldn't miss and we had a hard time finding it," said Sweetwater coach Al Hunt. "Several times we had hands in their faces, and they still dropped it."

Kaleb Hoover led Sweetwater with 11 points. Taylor Jones and Dylan Bennett scored seven, Dylon Adames six and Tino Martinez four to round out the scoring.

The Steers return to action Friday at Snyder. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

SWEETWATER (35) — Dylan Bennett 1 5-6 7; Taylor Jones 1 5-9 7; Kaleb Hoover 4 3-5 11; Tino Martinez 1 2-2 4; Dylon Adames 3 0-0 6. Total: 10 15-22 35.

After falling behind 10-0 in the first two minutes of play, Sweetwater twice rallied to within striking distance of Big Spring in Tuesday's district girls game.

Both times, however, the Lady Steers responded with a decisive run as they beat the Lady Mustangs, 58-39, at Mustang Gym.

Sweetwater (0-3, 14-14) narrowed the lead to 16-12 on a three-pointer by Kendra Crosson early in the second quarter, only to see Big Spring (1-2, 17-7) run off the next nine points.

The Lady Mustangs came right back with nine straight points, capping the run with a three-pointer by Suede Shirley, to get within 25-21 in the first minute of the third quarter. But this time Big Spring went on a 16-4 tear to put the game out of reach, leading 41-25 entering the fourth quarter.

"We came out flat and let them have a 10-point lead early," said coach Candice Wyatt. "I really expected my seniors to play better. If we're going to win in the future, we have to play to our capabilities."

Diamond Mayes scored 17 points and Bridgette Tuitt added 12 to lead the Lady Steers.

Crosson had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Sweetwater, which faces another tough game when it goes to Brownwood Friday. Shirley had eight points, Kinsey Browning seven and Shelby Cason, Kelsi Crosson, Alicia Finn and Candice Hernandez two.
