The Big Spring Senior Citizens Center has a shiny new dance floor, and officials there are eager to show it off to the public.
The center will hold a “grand re-opening” dance to celebrate the new floor Friday, Aug. 9, from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.. The dance, featuring live country-western music, is free to the public and refreshments will be served, Director MaryJo Toomire said.
A portion of the roof over the dance area collapsed under the weight of heavy snow 17 months ago, resulting in major damage to the floor, Toomire noted.
Until funds could be secured for the floor's repair, the area around it had to be cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape. As might be expected, this caused no small amount of inconvenience to center visitors.
“That part of the building couldn't be used for anything,” she said. “It was a big eyesore — it looked like a construction site — and we were really glad to see it repaired.”
Lee George Construction crews recently repaired the roof and dance floor and it is now ready for use, Toomire said.
