Bridge debris could be cleared today

November 7, 2013

Traffic at the site of a collapsed overpass bridge on Interstate 20 could resume normal operations sooner than originally anticipated, transportation officials said.

The FM 2566 overpass bridged collapsed onto the westbound lane of the interstate at mile marker 170 after it was struck by an 18-wheeler late Tuesday. No major injuries were reported, but the collapse forced traffic in both directions to be rerouted.

Darah Waldrip, public information officer for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Abilene office, said officials originally feared it would take up to two weeks to remove debris from the site and reopen normal traffic operations, but that estimate has been updated.

“TxDOT now has a contractor at the site of the incident and debris removal has started,” Waldrip said. “Now that work is under way, it appears that traffic on the main lanes of I-20 will be restored sooner than originally estimated.”

TxDOT officials said this morning that work has proceeded much more quickly than anticipated and normal traffic operations could resume sometime today.
