BSFD awarded truck to fight brush fires

The Big Spring Fire Department has a shiny new weapon in it's arsenal of firefighting tools, adding a $100,000 brush truck to its fleet, compliments of the State Legislature.

According to BSFD spokesman Craig Ferguson, the truck — which is used to fight brush fires in areas fire engines are unable to reach — didn't cost the city of Big Spring a dime and represents a considerable step forward for the department.

“This brush truck is four-wheel drive, so it can get to a lot of places the fire engines simply can't go,” Ferguson said. “A few years ago we had some fires up in Kentwood and Highland, and because of the steep terrain we pretty much had to wait for the fires to get to us before we could do anything. This brush truck will allow us to take fires like that head-on, which can prevent a tremendous amount of damage.”
