Big Spring High School art students are hoping to shine at this weekend's Visual Arts Scholastic Event regional meet in Odessa.

Seventeen BSHS students exhibiting a total of 30 works are entered in the regional meet, being held at Odessa Permian High School.

Students who medal at this weekend's meet advance to the state VASE exhibition, to be held in Bryan this March.

High School Art Teacher Judy Terelestsky said she believes many of her students' entries are state meet worthy.

“I'm always pleased with the regional meet entries,” said Tereletsky, who is attending her 14th regional meet at head of the BSHS art department. “But, of the total number of students, we have 11 who are returning for the second or third time. Those kids, especially the seniors, are very hopeful of qualifying for the state meet.”

At this weekend's event, students will exhibit their works during a one-on-one interview with a a professional artist.

“They'll be judged on a scale that's been established by the state,” Tereletsky said. “The judges will look for imagination, craftmanship and knowledge of the medium, as well as elements and principles of design.”
Roughly 10 percent of the entries at the Odessa meet will advance to Bryan next month, with about 10 percent of the state entries eventually earning medals, she added.

BSHS students entered in this weekend's regional meet are seniors Kalob Arteaga, Thomas Bazaldua, Aaron Farr, Amanda Grisham, Sydney Hernandez, Remington Love, Adrian Olague, A.J. Stuckert and Savi Vela; juniors George Garcia, Valerie Goodblanket and Tanya Herrera; sophomores Taylor Holloway, Autumn Moore, Taylor Olivo and Melyssa Ramirez; and freshman Leah Burton.
