BSHS girls dominate at track and field regional championship

LUBBOCK — The Big Spring High School girls track and field team took first place as a squad at the regional championship Saturday, ensuring them a spot at the state championship in Austin.

After winning district convincingly, the Lady Steers entered regionals with momentum.

BSHS racked up 82 points, beating out runners-up Wylie who recorded 63 points.

Bridgett Tuitt placed second in the triple jump (37-1 1/3) and second in the 200 (25.48). Jodi Jones took second in the pole vault (10-6), and Big Spring earned the top spot as a team in the 400 relay (48.66), as well as the 800 relay (1:41.26).

Also qualifying were Cerby Ritchey (discus); Donisha McGee, Bridgett Tuitt, April Turner and Dyrshae Vanderbilt in the 200. Ambra Hill and Autumn Minter punched their tickets to Austin by qualifying as relay alternates.

Last year, the Lady Steers missed winning state by two points. This year, the seniors were intent on getting there.

“We want those two points,” Tuitt said in an interview prior to the regional tourney.

The hard work and determination has paid off for the close-knit core of upperclassmen, and Coach Nick Roberson is pleased to see them succeed as a result.

“They definitely took the right steps and competed hard,” Roberson said. “We will be in the mix in two weeks. I think they will fare well. We will put in our best efforts and the chips will fall where they may.”

The state track meet is set for May 11-12 in Austin.
