BSHS girls pick up 52-41 win over Lake View

November 10, 2010

SAN ANGELO — As expected, Big Spring women’s basketball coach Mike Warren has a lot to learn about his 2010-2011 Lady Steers.

But after Tuesday’s 52-41 win over San Angelo Lake View in San Angelo to start the season, he does know Cerbi Ritchey, Mckenzie Stone and Bridgette Tuitt are looking like the go-to scorers.

Ritchey turned in a double-double, posting 23 points and 13 rebounds. Stone had 16 points — including three 3-pointers — and was tough on the defensive end with five steals. Tuitt only had six, but Warren said she was still effective.

“Our main three scorers, it looks like it’s going to be Stone, Ritchey and Tuitt,” he said after Tuesday’s win. “Bridgette, for her, really didn’t have a really good scoring night, but her played some defense for us. I’m glad we rebounded well. Cerbi did a good job on rebounding.”

In addition to what Ritchey, Stone and Tuitt can do, defensively, Warren believes Big Spring’s full-court press should win a lot of games.

Warren was also impressed with the 13-of-19 free throw shooting from his team and hopes that continues.

The 19 turnovers were a problem, however.

The Lady Steers have until Saturday to work on that before Abilene Cooper comes to town at 3 p.m. in Steer Gym.

This team is still coming together, too. With the likes of Ritchey, Tuitt and Valerie Ross on the team, Warren said some of his girls are making the transition from volleyball to basketball season. Figuring out what he has on the bench is key, too.

“Offensively, we’ve still got volleyball (players) coming out,” Warren said. “They’re still learning our offense, we’re still getting them in basketball shape. We have a good bench, but they’re going to have to come along and help us score.”
