LUBBOCK — The Big Spring High School boys' golf team is part of a seven-team logjam at the top of the standings following first-day play at the Region I-3A tournament Wednesday.
The Steers are in fifth place with a team score of 327, eight strokes behind leader Borger and a mere three shots back of second-place Andrews. Glen Rose is third with a 325, followed by Levelland at 326. Big Spring and Abilene Wylie are tied with identical 327 scores.
The top two teams qualify for next month's University Interscholastic League state tournament in Austin.
“It was really tough conditions Wednesday, and the course is in horrible shape,” BSHS Coach Chris Joslin said. “That kind of evened it out for everybody.”
Blake Brorman is tied for third place in the medalist standings with a score of 74, three shots behind leader Hunter Wade of Perryton. Other Big Spring results included Andrew Fillingim with 83, Devin Roberson at 84, and Tate Kennedy and Ryan Pollard, who both shot scores of 86.
Joslin said the outing was sub-par for his team, but added that things could have been worse.
“We're really fortunate, considering the way we played,” he said. “But all the teams played pretty badly. We know we can improve … so that makes us feel better.”
Play concludes today at the Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock.View more articles in:
