March 29, 2011

BROWNWOOD — The Big Spring High School boys' golf team has claimed the early edge in District 5-3A competition.

Paced by Blake Brorman's 4-under-par 68, the Steers shot a team total 308 to lead the district by 10 strokes after first-round play Monday in Brownwood.

Abilene Wylie was second at 318, while Sweetwater held the third spot with a team total of 324.

Brorman's performance gave him a five-stroke advantage in the medalist competition, while teammate Andrew Fillinghim was third with a 74. Other BSHS scores included Devin Roberson with an 82, Tate Kennedy with an 84 and Ryan Pollard with an 85.

Big Spring's B team, consisting of Jason Guevara, Nolan Beal, Stormy Emery, Tayler Hester and Matt Davila, stood in eighth place after Monday's first round.

“The guys did everything we wanted them to do, especially with the tournament coming to our place for the second round,” BSHS Coach Chris Joslin said. “We wanted to stay close to the leaders, and we did even better than that.”

The Steers host the second round of the 5-3A tournament, tentatively scheduled for Monday at Big Spring Country Club.
