Several Big Spring High School students received medals for their work during the recent Visual Arts Scholastic Event regional meet in Odessa.

The students earned the medals after receiving a ranking of 4 (the highest possible) from judges at the meet, BSHS Art Teacher Judy Tereletsky said. In total, 24 of the 30 submitted works from BSHS students earned medals.

Students earning two medals at the event were: Thomas Bazaldua, Leah Burton, Aaron Farr, Valerie Goodblanket, Sydney Hernandez, Tanya Herrera, Taylor Holloway, Remington Love and Savi Vela. Students earning a single medal were: Kalob Artega, George Garcia, Autumn Moore, Adrian Olague and Taylor Olivo.

Despite the medal haul, none of the Big Spring entries earned “area medal” status, which would have allowed the students to advance to the state VASE competition later this year in Bryan.

Tereletsky said competition for area medals was fierce.

“There were 295 total entries at the regional meet and only 19 qualified for state,” she said.

Despite that, Tereletsky said the experience as a positive one for the students.

“Overall, I think the kids enjoyed it,” she said. “It's always good for them to meet others with the same interests they have. They're disappointed no one qualified for state, but I'm happy with the overall results.”
