The Big Spring High School swim team looks to take the next step after a successful showing at the District 4-4A meet Jan. 21 and 22.

The regional meet begins today and ends Saturday at the Andrews High School Natotorium in Andrews and the young Steers are well-represented.

Caleb McMahon, Andrew Johnson, Eli Castillo and Seth Pearson represent the boys today in individual events. Megan Larson will be the lone girl representing Big Spring.

In addition to this, though, all Big Spring’s relay teams are at regionals, too. At the district meet, there were five relay teams available to compete in each event, and with the top six qualifying for regionals, every school’s relay teams got a ticket despite their finishes.

At the district meet, the Big Spring boys finished third and the girls fourth and first-year head coach Mackenzie Miles is hoping to build off that success.

“This will leave another opportunity to drop time, and an experience for the kids to see their great potential as high school swimmers, she said. “I think that they are really pumped up and excited to see what else they can do after this district meet. I also think it gives them a more positive, motivated outlook for next year.”

Miles pointed out the boys 200 yard freestyle relay team of McMahon, Castillo, Ricky Garza and Pearson, which came in third at district. The girls 400 yard freestyle relay team of Meagan Grisham, Bianca Griego, Sydney Hernandez and Mari Castillo also brought home a bronze medal.

The Steers will be up against 16 teams with hopes of earning a spot at state. Preliminaries today begin at 2:10 p.m. and finals begin at 11:10 a.m. Saturday.
