BSHS in thick of things at district track meet

SNYDER — The Big Spring High School girls are in first place and the boys stand in second after the first day of the District 5-3A track meet in Snyder Tuesday.

Paced by Jaycee Williams' first place finish in the 3,200 meter run, the Lady Steers currently lead the district meet with 37 points after four events, one point ahead of second place Abilene Wylie. Brownwood is currently third with 33 points.

Williams won the ,3200 in a time of 12 minutes, 38.62 seconds while Kristen Rush of Wylie was second in a time of 12:43.73. BSHS' Chelsea Torres was sixth in a time of 13:27.51.

In the triple jump, Desiree Anderson finished second with a jump of 36 feet, 5.5 inches, while Bridgette Tuitt was third at with the same distance.

Other top 6 finishes for the Lady Steers included Bianca Ryle and Cerbi Ritchey, who were third and fourth, respectively, in the shot put, and Jodi Jones, who finished fifth in pole vault.

In the boys' division, Big Spring is two points behind meet leader Brownwood after four events and earned most of its points via a 1-2-3 finish in the triple jump and Gustavo Lugo's win in the 3,200 meter run.

Mike Menefield, Seth Pearson and Anthony Lewis claimed the top three spots in the triple jump, with Menefield taking gold in a distance of 46-6.5, almost five fee better than runner-up Pearson.

Lugo finished the 3,200 run in a time of 10:27.72, more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Cameron McLaghlin of Brownwood.

Other top 6 finishes for BSHS included Mike Williams, who was fourth in the 3,200, and Julian Ramirez, who placed fifth in the shot put.

The top three finishers in each event advance to the Region I-3A track meet in Lubbock early next month.
