BSISD board to hear preconstruction update

It is still several months before actual ground-breaking, but Big Spring Independent School District officials are busy preparing for the start of $63 million in construction projects that will affect every campus.

BSISD trustees will receive an update on those preparations when they hold their monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

Since voters approved a $63 million bond issue in May to drastically upgrade the districts' campuses, school officials have taken busy in making sure preliminary work is complete before actual ground-breaking commences in early May.

Over the next few years, the district will receive a massive facelift. Projects include:

• Three new elementary campuses, housing students in grades kindergarten through 5, to replace Washington, Marcy and Goliad.

• Demolition of those three campuses, plus the vacant College Heights building and parts of the campus at Bauer Elementary, which is scheduled for closure.

• Extensive renovations at Moss Elementary, which will allow that campus to house grades K-5, and Big Spring Junior High, which will be modified to house students in grades 6 through 8.

• Big Spring High School also will be renovated, receiving new science labs, an expanded band hall, a new roof and other improvements.
