BSISD finalizes redistricting map

After three months of sometime-intensive effort, Big Spring Independent School District officials have a new voting-district map they believe will receive federal and public approval.

Trustees discussed the new map, which is designed to increase minority representation on the school board, during their Thursday meeting at the high school board room.

The major change brought about by the redraw is that BSISD will now have three voting districts that are predominantly minority in ethnic makeup and four with Anglos making up the majority. Currently, the school district has two predominantly minority districts.

Raul Marquez, chairman of the Redistricting Advisory Committee, told trustees the group tweaked the boundary lines of District 6 (represented by Board President Jeff Brorman) to increase its minority voting-age population.
