BSISD officials to consider fourth new elementary campus

January 5, 2011

Big Spring Independent School District officials are looking at the possibility of adding another new elementary campus to current construction plans.

Back in May, voters authorized $63 million in construction projects, which included three new elementary campuses and extensive renovation at Moss Elementary.

Officials say, however, the the difference, cost-wise, between renovating Moss and replacing it with a new building has shrunk to the point that they may be able to justify the construction of a fourth new elementary campus.

“Nothing's been decided,” BSISD Superintendent Steven Saldivar said. “But when we looked at the costs, to renovate Moss will cost us between $9.7 million and $10 million, while a new building would cost us around $11 million.”

One of the options officials are looking at to eliminate that gap is to have BSISD personnel perform some of the construction work, which would allow the district to add another campus while staying within the financial boundaries set by voters in May.
